Here are three things you can do today to help animals:
Spay and neuter your pets:
•Spaying and neutering helps end the cycle of euthanasia of animals
•Sterilized pets live longer, healthier lives and they suffer from fewer behavioral problems
•Sterilization is a relatively simple, routine procedure that does not harm the animal or change Its personality
Call SPAY/USA at 1-800-248 SPAY or visit www.pets911.com to find other low or no cost spay/neuter programs.
Please consider adopting a pet from a shelter or rescue group instead of buying a pet.
The animals at rescue groups and shelters desperately need homes; in most cases you will be saving the life of the pet you adopt, and saving another animal’s life by making space for It at the shelter.
Too often, pet stores purchase their animals at the notorious breeding factories known as puppy mills, where female dogs are kept in small cages their entire lives and are forced to produce endless litters of babies who are sold to pet stores. In most cases, these puppy mills provide no medical care, no exercise and no love for the imprisoned dogs.
Most dogs purchased on the internet are purchased from puppy mills, even if the seller calls him or herself a breeder, and especially when the animal comes from the mid west.
Pet stores must provide guarantees that they receive their pets from qualified breeders, and not from puppy mills or non qualified breeders.
If you are looking for a particular breed, there are numerous breed rescue groups that will help you find the particular dog or cat breed of your choice.
Legitimate, qualified breeders know and understand blood lines and help maintain breed health and safety. Backyard “breeders” are not breeders at all – these backyard breeders give the legitimate, quality breeders bad reputations. For these reasons, efil’s god Dog Training believes that quality breeders should receive the recognition they deserve, and deserve the right to be licensed by meeting and adhering to specific requirements.
Volunteer:
If you would like to help animals on a regular basis, you can volunteer at any of the local shelters, veterinary clinics, or animal welfare organizations. You can contribute your particular skills, your time, and your love to animals in need.
Local animal groups need every kind of help you can think of: whatever your passion, profession or business, you can donate your skills and talents to help animals.
Write Letters and Campaign for Animal Rights and Animal Welfare:
You can go on line to any animal related organization’s web site and write letters to influence political leaders as well as the companies who create animal products, such as food and toy products, as well as other organizations to support animal welfare and animal rights. Just because a company makes an animal product, this does not mean that the product is safe or healthy for animals.
Government officials do not necessarily serve animals, and often do not serve animal lovers and pet owners as a whole. There are many opportunities on line to write to government officials regarding animal welfare. Some of the very best include:
•Best Friends Animal Society – www.bestfriends.org
•ASPCA – www.aspca.com
•WSPA - www.wspa.org
•Peta – www.peta.org
•World Wildlife Fund – www.wwf.org
•Defenders of Wildlife – www.defendersofwildlife.org
•Bad Rap – www.badrap.org
Other ways to help animals include:
•Report Animal Cruelty
•Educate yourself and others about how animals are used to serve human needs
•Make humane food choices for humans and for pets
•Use your purchasing power to purchase products which treat animals humanely
•Live in harmony with all living creatures, including the wild kind
•Avoid establishments which treat animals harmfully
•Be prepared for disasters
