Animal Myth Conceptions
Animal Myth Conception #1:
Certain breeds, such as Pit Bulls and German Shepherds are more dangerous than others.
•There is no such thing as a dangerous dog, there are only dangerous handlers
•Dog temperament is quite predictable unless a dog handler shapes the dog’s personality in a negative way by not providing true love and leadership
•In the same way that we cannot discriminate against any particular human, sec, denomination, gender, class, race or nationality, we cannot discriminate against any dog breed
•It is not built into dog (or any animal) genetics or natural make up to be mean or unpredictable. We learn this behavior through a life of fear, pain, punishment and unpredictability
•Unpredictable or dangerous dogs are a product of their environment and the lack of love and true leadership from their handlers or owners
•When we provide our dogs with love and leadership, they are not unpredictable, they are loving, kind and predictable in return, no matter what the breed.
Isn’t it the same way with us humans? And just like humans, dogs are inherently good and worthy, also able to be rehabilitated with love, leadership and kindness, and understand forgiveness; in fact, It was waiting there all the time.
Perhaps this is one of the greatest lessons we can learn from dogs, and indeed, all animals.
Animal Myth Conception #2:
Pets have offspring so children can experience the miracle of birth.
•Dogs and cats prefer to give birth in the quiet alone, and since they are connected to their own bodies, they usually chose a time to give birth when no one will interfere. If you try to watch and have your children watch the births, the birthing process will not be as smooth for your pet
•Children can see miracles just as well when they learn the miracle of respect for all animals through the process of sterilization
Animal Myth Conception #3:
Spaying and Neutering is not safe.
•With a qualified veterinarian, animal sterilization is very safe, and quite routine
•There really is only good that can come from sterilizing your pet. It is a routine and safe procedure from which your pet will require only a few days of calm rest to recover
Animal Myth Conception #4:
Spaying and neutering will change a pet’s masculinity or personality.
•Sterilization process does not change a pet’s personality. It does generally make a pet calmer and slightly more submissive since there is not as much hormone being produced in the pet’s body after the sterilization process
•If you are still not convinced, consider this: un-neutered male dogs are responsible for over 70% of all dog bites!
Animal Myth Conception #5:
A beautiful cat or dog will be adopted out in no time.
•There are not enough homes for all of our unwanted pets. If a pet ends up in a shelter which practices mass euthanasia, it is extremely likely that the pet will end up being euthanized
•Every 5-6 seconds, a pet's life is terminated unnecessarily
