No More Homeless Pets via Responsibility and Accountability
My goal and dream is to create a world of no homeless or cruelly treated pets. I know it is possible. To this end, we must have responsible pet owners, responsible pet breeders, responsibility in the pet community, and accountability from all, for all.
Responsibility and Accountability from all, for all means:
•Responsible pet ownership and pet sterilization
•Responsible, licensed breeders, veterinarians, pet stores, shelters and handlers
• Accountability from every member in the pet community, and every member in the animal community
Even the unadoptables are adoptable – Any dog can be rehabilitated, and because dog’s don’t live in the thoughts of their past, any dog can readjust to a new home, with proper behavioral training and leadership.
When I work with dogs, I am always amazed at how quickly they can adapt and change, and while they do not like the change, they prefer repetition and consistency, they can always adjust with the change.
From my trainer/behaviorist perspective, one of the real keys to creating no more homeless pets is proper training. The majority, over 90% of dogs, who end up in shelters are there because of behavioral problems. Over 90% of these behavioral problems are a result of anxiety in the dog. That means, if we address the anxiety, the dog is easier to control and has fewer behavioral problems, and is therefore more manageable.
Before giving your pet up for adoption, or turning him or her over to a shelter, consider the option of behavioral training as a solution to rehoming.
My clients are always amazed at their dog’s change – they often say, “This is a different dog than the dog I had before you came!” This is not to say that a personality change has happened, but it is to say that behavior is drastically modified.
It is more attainable than you may realize, and you and your dog will be together in a happier and balanced pack.
